The FFIZ Factor: Future Flight in the South West

The UK Future Flight Innovation Zone (FFIZ) is designed to accelerate the development of future flight technologies. By fostering a smart, sustainable aviation and advanced air mobility industry, the initiative also provides the critical framework needed to support the decarbonisation of the aerospace sector here in the South West.

The zone is managed by Somerset Council working collaboratively with a wider ecosystem of aerospace assets, academia, skills and training providers, industrial partners, and organisations and institutions including the Catapult Network, CAA and the Met Office. FFIZ represents the next chapter for a region with a deep-rooted heritage in flight.

The zone is uniquely positioned to lead and coordinate growth in the drone sector and ensure an effective ecosystem by coordinating multiple entities, such as SMEs, OEMs, regulators, air traffic control, and other key parties. This involves prioritising a testing ground and examining commercial opportunities for civil and defence capabilities.

Building on world-class capabilities spanning Devon to Somerset, the zone acts as a “living lab”; a space to develop, test, and commercialise new technologies under real-world conditions, both in the air and on the ground.

Scarlett Sayfritz (pictured), Project Coordinator and industrial placement trainee at Leonardo, highlighted the strategic importance of the zone: “SWFFIZ is the bridge between the region’s pioneering spirit and the commitment to tomorrow’s zero-emission skies; this is supported by the South West’s innovators and collaborators.”

From drones and uncrewed aerial vehicles to traditional aircraft, the zone serves as the ultimate testbed for:

  • Hybrid propulsion systems

  • Electric aviation

  • Hydrogen-powered flight

The iAero Centre remains at the heartbeat of this initiative, through its unique airfield positioning in Yeovil by Leonardo and as a host for pivotal workshops on drone technologies. These sessions focus on how the zone can successfully transition theoretical testing into practical and scalable development.

Corinne Matthews (pictured), FFIZ Programme Manageradded: “We have so much capability on our doorstep in the South West; the technology is ready, but we need to understand the demand signals from the market on how we elevate these uncrewed capabilities into the defence space. FFIZ is uniquely positioned to deliver on this commitment through the industrial network and know-how that we have built in Somerset and Devon over the last 110 years.”
