It has been four years since the ribbon was cut on the £10 million iAero Centre in Yeovil, marking a seismic shift in how the South West approaches the future of flight. Originally opened back in 2022, the innovative aerospace hub has evolved from a blueprint for innovation to a flightpath for autonomy.
Built on land provided by its key strategic partner, Leonardo Helicopters UK, the 2,500 square metre facility was designed with a mission: to provide an agile environment free from the constraints of traditional manufacturing. Now in 2026, iAero is bridging the gap between global aerospace giants and local small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs).

- AVoptics Ltd is a specialist in advanced harsh environment solutions. It provides high-performance connectivity, photonics research, and free-space optical technology for demanding aerospace applications.
- Cyclopic: This innovator has pioneered a revolutionary micro-mobility concept designed to scale into a global technological solution across multiple industrial domains.
- Mark3D: As the leading expert in Markforged technology, Mark3D has been at the forefront of providing and supporting advanced composite and metal 3D printing solutions across the UK and Europe since 2017.
- Techosaurus: A founder-led, EdTech consultancy based in Somerset, Techosaurus specialises in the practical application of AI and automation for the modern workplace.
- Volander: A veteran-led producer and innovator of autonomous systems, which specialises in electronics, and advanced flight platforms.
- Yeovil College has been serving the community since 1887, the college is a cornerstone of education in Somerset and Dorset, now recognised as one of only five Defence Technical Excellence Colleges in England.

Sustainability
Since its inception, a key focus at iAero is sustainability. The hub has become a testing ground for innovations in alternative fuels, advanced air mobility, and autonomous flight systems. This is critical for a region that proudly holds the largest aerospace cluster in the UK and the second largest in Europe.
With this in mind, sustainability has been woven into the facility’s DNA. The Centre operates on a simple, powerful ethos which considers the global climate challenges and demands local solutions.
This has been highlighted through the integration of AMRC Factory+ technology which has transformed the energy consumption from a static metric into a living narrative. By isolating the energy profile of every room and piece of machinery, the Centre has moved beyond rough estimations into a realm of total transparency.

This granular data empowers the team to execute the operational pivots that define the “Factory of the Future,” ensuring real-time industrial output is intrinsically linked to broader climate commitments.
Furthermore, iAero has a harmonised automated LED efficiency with expansive natural lighting, crafting high-quality, vibrant work environments for the Centre’s collaborators. Through the deployment of smart plugs on 3D printers, engineers can interrogate the energy cost of every prototype, embedding sustainable manufacturing into daily habits. The transition to low-carbon living is facilitated further by integrated EV charging and cycling infrastructure.
Skills
iAero supports our strategic plan by providing a collaborative hub for innovation and skills development. Furthermore, it enables direct engagement with aerospace and advanced engineering businesses. iAero acts as a platform for showcasing Yeovil College’s technical capabilities and partnerships.
Henry on a nine-month placement at the Centre worked as a Technical Operator at the centre, where they facilitated the use, maintenance, and development of equipment at iAero.
Scarlett, Project Coordinator and industrial placement trainee at Leonardo, has been integral to the UK Future Flight Innovation Zone (FFIZ) project, which captures the region’s pioneering spirit and the commitment to tomorrow’s zero-emission skies.

By opening its doors to academic institutions such as hosting high-profile student, STEM, and employer events with the Yeovil College University Centre – iAero is actively upskilling the next generation of engineers right where the technology is being born.
In April 2026, the Yeovil College D-TEC consortium was successfully awarded Defence Technical Excellence College (D‑TEC) status following a highly competitive national application process led by the Department for Education (DfE).
iAero supports the College’s strategic plan by providing a collaborative hub for innovation and skills development. Furthermore, the Centre enables direct engagement with aerospace and advanced engineering businesses, and acts as a platform for showcasing Yeovil College’s technical capabilities and partnerships.
Yeovil College will play a key role in strengthening the pipeline of skilled talent into defence‑related industries, supporting both regional economic growth and national priorities through the D-TEC and beyond.
As the aerospace industry faces unparalleled pressure to decarbonise and innovate, iAero’s role as Somerset’s premier collaborative playground is more critical than ever. Four years in, the blueprint ideas are taking flight from iAero in a tangible and practical hub.
